St. John was known as the beloved disciple because he seemed to have been the favourite of Jesus. He and his brother James were sons of Zebedee and were both followers and disciples of Jesus. They were fishermen and together with Peter and Andrew forsook their boats and nets and followed Jesus. St. John, with St. Peter and St. James, belonged to the inner circle of Apostles, who were present at the Transfiguration, at the raising of the daughter of Jairus and were nearest to the Master at the Agony in Gethsemane. This disciple, whom Jesus loved, sat next to Him at the Last Supper ad asked who should betray Him. Usually represented with a pen and book because the Back of St. John is thought to haw been written by him.

He is usually depicted with a sword and the Bible because of his militant attitude to Christianity prior to his conversion.
